Grasping who God is
God is one and unlike anything we know. What's normal to Him is beyond our ability to conceive or understand. He exists eternally and we have but one very short life time, therefore we see in relation to time but He sees in relation to eternity. There is nothing in all creation that is similar to him.
We can look at creation and the heavens and know it has been created, but that fact doesn’t give us any information other than His incredible ability to create out of nothing. And we get that from Genesis 1. So if we are to know anything about Him, we must get it from the pages of Scripture where He has chosen to reveal Himself to us.
We can learn of Him as He records the creation in just 7 days. We can learn glimpses of His character from the names He records for us in the Old Testament. We can learn of Him by His promises, covenants, laws and statutes He has recorded for Israel in the Old Testament. We can learn of Him from the New Testament where He, in the person of Jesus, shows us what all of His Old Testament names would look like in the flesh as a man.
Or we can guess and have “ideas” of what He is like based on ourselves and our preferences. The choice is ours to make, but when our life on this earth is over, then what? What if we are designed to live forever?
As for me, the option was easy. I chose to look to the Scriptures which have been “God breathed” to guide me in the pursuit of God. They certainly may not be exhaustive in all I desire to know, but it will be all that I need to know. And coupled with that, we must walk by faith, believing God. So let’s start with 2nd Timothy and Hebrews 11 and see what the Scripture has to say.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (Historical Highway) All Scripture is given by Theopneustos, the inspiration of God or God breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of Theos, the Triune God, may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Hebrews 11:1-3 (Historical Highway) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of Theos, the Triune God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
Hebrews 11:6 (Historical Highway) But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to Theos, the Triune God, must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
God is one, but uses many different names to communicate His purposes to us in the Scripture. Associated with His name is His desire to love and to be loved by mankind. We see that He has demonstrated His love towards us in the most tangible way possible. In other words, He desires a reciprocal love relationship.
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 (Historical Highway) "Hear, O Israel. Jehovah, who saves by covenant, our Creator Eloheim, Jehovah is one! You shall love Jehovah, who saves by covenant, your Creator Eloheim with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them, when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
John 3:14-17 (Historical Highway) And as Moses lifted up the bronze serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For Theos, the Triune God, so agape, loved the world with the Triune God’s self-sacrificing love, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For Theos, the Triune God, did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Ephesians 2:4-10 (Historical Highway) But Theos, the Triune God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ, (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christos Iesous, Christ Jesus, the Anointed One, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christos Iesous, Christ Jesus, the Anointed One. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of Theos, the Triune God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christos Iesous, Christ Jesus, the Anointed One, for good works, which Theos, the Triune God, prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
The next thing we need to know is that He can not lie. It is not in His nature. Let’s see what it says in Numbers and Hebrews about this.
Numbers 23:19 (Historical Highway) El the Almighty is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
Hebrews 6:17-18 (Historical Highway) Thus Theos, the Triune God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for Theos, the Triune God, to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
God is all knowing and therefore we can come before Him without fearing because He knows us and all of our circumstances, hopes and fears and loves us.
Psalm 139:1-4 (Historical Highway) O Jehovah, who saves by covenant, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up. You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Jehovah, who saves by covenant, You know it altogether.
The most astounding thing is that God wants all mankind to be saved. And that is, after all, because of man’s rebellion from the very beginning through and to include today. That’s incredible.
He has had this desire for us to be redeemed from the day that Adam and Eve rebelled in the Garden. That tells us that the fall did not catch Him by surprise, but He, from the very beginning, had plans for “His Seed” through the woman to destroy the “seed of the Serpent” thus providing redemption for all of creation.
1 Timothy 2:5-6 (Historical Highway) For this is good and acceptable in the sight of Theos, the Triune God, our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
For there is one Theos, the Triune God, and one Mediator between Theos, the Triune God, and man, the Man Christo Iesous, Christ Jesus, the Anointed One, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to become evident in due time.
2 Timothy 2:19 (Historical Highway) Nevertheless the solid foundation of Theos, the Triune God stands, having this seal, "Kyrios, the Lord, knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christos, Christ, the Anointed One, depart from iniquity."
Galatians 4:4-7 (Historical Highway) But when the fullness of the time had come, Theos the Triune God, sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, Theos the Triune God, has sent forth Pneuma, the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of Theos, the Triune God through Christ, the Anointed One.
After time has run its course with all the judgements that are listed in Revelation, and God finishes all His dealings with the Church and Israel, then He will bring the dead, both small and great, to stand before Him. And the books, including the Book of Life, are going to be opened and all are judged based on those things which are written in the books, according to their works. Then the New Heaven and New Earth will be created, and those whose names appear in the Book of Life and God will live together for all eternity. This was His intended plan from the very beginning, but we still have a choice! Either, by faith we believe Him and look forward to this event, or we live according to what we want to believe and hope for the best. The choice is ours.
Revelation 21:5-7 (Historical Highway) And He that sat upon the throne said,
“Behold, I make all things new.”
And He said to me,
“Write, for these words are true and faithful.”
And he said to me,
“It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He that overcomes shall inherit all things and I will be his Theos, the Triune God, and he shall be my son”.
There is much more that can be said, but this is a good start.
Now may God Himself guide and bless you,
a fellow soldier of JesusChrist
