Most of the Bible, Genesis chapter 3 thru to Revelation chapter 20, is the clear and concise record of man’s "fall" in the garden, the responses, and actions of men in their fallen condition and the redemption process the Lord has provided to redeem all of mankind from the consequences of sin. This redemption is provided by a loving and personal God, who though sovereign, yet is also compassionate and ever-present to protect and preserve both in time and in eternity, by way of covenant relationship, all that trust in Him. But those who reject this and turn from Living Sovereign God to their own means, whatever they are, are destined for an eternity without God.
Believers down thru the centuries, by and large, have never questioned the reality of eternal judgment but instead took it as a very real deterrent to unbelief and ungodliness. This produced some of the most compelling reasons to walk righteously and seek after God.
Judgment is a consequence which God gives every opportunity to avoid. He says very clearly that He wants all to be saved and hell was designed for Satan and his angels, not man.
Now as you read the book of the Eternal Judgement is literal, may God Himself draw you to Himself and richly bless you as you conclude the “Historical Highway thru the Bible.”
Eternal Judgment is literal - a brief sketch
2 Peter 2:4-11 (Historical Highway)
For if Theos, the Triune God did, not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment, and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly, and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly, and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds), then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord.
depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels
Matthew 25:31-33 41-46 (Historical Highway)
When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.
Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels, for, I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’
Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Kyrios, Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’
Then He will answer them, saying,
‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’
And these will go away into everlasting punishment.
it is a prison
1 Peter 3:19 (Historical Highway)
by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,
with gates and locks
Job 17:16 (Historical Highway)
will they go down to the gates of Sheol, the world of the dead?
Matthew 16:18 (Historical Highway)
...and I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades, a place of the departed, shall not prevail against it.
I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades, a place of the departed, and of Death.
